As far as I can determine, the name Cosgriff is one variant of the Irish name Coscraigh (Cosgraigh) meaning "victorious." The variants Coskry, Coskrey, Coskery, Croskery, McCosker, McCusker are found also in Scotland and the northern part of Ireland. Today, the most common forms in Ireland are Cosgrave and Cosgrove.

My particular line comes from northern County Cork where the native Irish (Gaelic) is still spoken by some to this day. In this area, the name was pronounced Cosgry and Coskry at first and then changed to Cosgriffe and Cosgriff. Now it is spelled Cosgrave or Cosgrove.
