| Records show that members of the Howell family have lived in the Rhyndwyclydach Parcel of Llangyfelach parish, Glamorgan since at least the mid 17th century. |

| In 1805 the family helped to establish Baran Independent Chapel on land leased from Nantmoel Uchaf farm. The Reverend Roger Howell became the founding minister of the chapel and served its members for 38 years. |
